Anxious vs avoidant attachment: how to break the dance
Attachment patterns are not life sentences. Once you can see the dance you are in, you can start to change the steps.

One person reaches for reassurance. The other, feeling crowded, pulls back. The reach intensifies. The withdrawal deepens. If this is familiar, you are caught in a very common dance, and neither of you is the villain.
Two strategies, one fear
The anxious pattern says: stay close so I know I am safe. The avoidant pattern says: keep some distance so I do not lose myself. Different strategies, often the same underlying fear of not being enough as you are.
- Anxious leaning: protest, pursue, seek reassurance
- Avoidant leaning: deactivate, withdraw, value independence
- The trap: each one triggers the other, again and again
You cannot out-argue an attachment pattern. You can only make it feel safe enough to soften.
Change starts with seeing the dance from the outside, without shame. From there, small experiments in safety, a steadier tone, a kept promise, a clear request, begin to rewrite what your nervous system expects from love.
