Coaching or therapy: which one do you actually need?
They are not the same work, and one is not better than the other. The real question is where you are standing right now, and which direction you want to move.

If you have been circling the idea of getting help, you have probably run into the two words and felt unsure which one is yours: therapy, or coaching. The honest answer is that they overlap more than the internet suggests, and the right choice has less to do with how serious your situation is than with which direction you want to face.
Therapy tends to look back
Therapy is often the right home for healing the past: trauma, depression, anxiety with roots running years deep. A good therapist helps you understand how you were shaped and tends to the wounds that shaping left. It is slow, important work, and for some seasons of life it is exactly what is needed.
Coaching tends to look forward
Coaching starts where you are and works toward where you want to be. We still honour the past, because the patterns you carry were learned somewhere, but the focus stays on the present: the fight you keep having, the boundary you cannot hold, the way you go quiet when you most want to be close, and the concrete skills to change it.
Therapy asks where the wound came from. Coaching asks what you want to build, now that you can see it.
How to tell which is yours
- If you are in crisis, or carrying trauma that floods you, begin with a therapist. That is not a lesser path, it is the right one.
- If you are functional but stuck, repeating the same relational pattern and ready to do something about it, coaching may fit.
- Many people do both, in different seasons or even at once. They are not rivals.
My own work blends inner-child and attachment understanding with practical, here-and-now tools. If you are not sure where you land, that is exactly what a first conversation is for. We can feel it out together, with no pressure either way.
