What love bombing actually is, and why it feels so good at first

Love bombing is not always deliberate. Sometimes the person doing it genuinely believes they are in love. That does not make it safe, and recognising it early can protect you.

Soft wild poppies against a pale sky

It felt like finally. After however many disappointing dates, here was someone who saw you, completely, immediately. They texted constantly, made sweeping declarations, talked about the future in the first week. It was intoxicating. And some part of you, the part that wanted to be loved like that, did not want to look too closely at how fast it was moving.

Why it works so well

Love bombing is effective because it targets something real: the deep human need to be seen and cherished. When someone meets that need with intense, total focus, the brain responds with dopamine, the same chemical involved in any compelling high. The intensity feels like proof of something. It is very hard to reason with, especially if you have spent time feeling unseen in past relationships.

Genuine love builds gradually, because it is based on actually knowing someone. Intensity that arrives before knowing you is almost always about the person doing it, not about you.

Signs to watch for

  • Declarations of love or a serious future within the first few weeks
  • A pace that feels exciting but also slightly breathless, like you cannot catch up to it
  • Constant contact that starts to feel less like affection and more like monitoring
  • Subtle pressure to reciprocate the intensity before you feel it naturally
  • A sense that the version of you they love is a slightly idealised one, not quite the full you

What usually follows

The bombing phase rarely lasts. Once the initial intensity settles, there is often a shift, sometimes sudden, into coldness, criticism, or withdrawal. This is not always calculated. In some cases, the person genuinely felt all of it and simply cannot sustain it. In others, the intensity was a strategy, conscious or not, to create attachment quickly before scrutiny could develop.

The healthiest thing you can do early in dating is to let the pace be gradual, not because you are withholding, but because real intimacy takes time. Someone who cannot tolerate that pace is showing you something important. Let it be information.
