How to build secure attachment, one repair at a time

Attachment styles are not fixed traits you are stuck with. They are patterns your nervous system learned, and patterns can be gently taught something new.

Two hands gently clasped in warm light

People often ask me whether they are an anxious type or an avoidant type, as though it were a fixed label stamped at birth. It is not. Attachment is a set of expectations your nervous system formed about whether closeness is safe. Expectations, unlike eye colour, can change.

What secure actually feels like

Security is not the absence of fear. It is being able to feel the fear and stay in the conversation anyway. It is reaching for someone and trusting they will reach back, and being able to steady yourself when they cannot get there right away. It is closeness without the constant bracing.

You do not think your way to secure attachment. You practise your way there, in small, repeated experiments of safety.

The small repairs that rewire it

Big declarations rarely shift a nervous system. Tiny, consistent moments do. A kept promise. A calm tone where the old you would have escalated. A need named out loud, and the discovery that the vulnerability did not end you. Each one is a small piece of evidence that closeness does not have to cost you yourself.

  • When you feel the old pull to chase or to flee, pause and name it: this is my pattern, not the truth of this moment.
  • Make and keep small promises, to others and to yourself. Reliability is how trust is built, brick by brick.
  • After a rupture, return. The repair matters more than the performance of getting it perfect.

This is slow work, and it does not happen alone. A steady relationship, whether with a partner, a friend, or a coach, is usually where the quiet rewiring happens.
